A Provider’s Perspective on GI Panel PCR Testing

A 38-year-old male patient came into Kyle’s clinic with severe diarrhea of 10 days’ duration that had not improved despite standard antibiotic treatment. He was having trouble oral hydrating himself to keep up with the fluid loss. The situation had escalated to the point that the patient got light-headed at home, nearly lost consciousness, and was not sure of a pathway forward. Despite the severity of his condition, the patient refused to go to the emergency department due to concerns about cost and disruption to his life.

“He was scared of the bill and what it would do to his life,” Kyle said. “He didn’t want to go to the ER, even after he passed out at home.”

A Decision That May Have Saved a Life

Given the seriousness of the case and the lack of response to treatment, Kyle ordered a HealthTrack GI Panel PCR test. He believes that the decision may have saved the patient’s life. “Because the test is quick and cost-effective, he was able to afford it and agree to move forward,” Kyle explained.

Answers That Traditional Testing Would Have Missed

Within 24 hours, the results provided clarity that traditional testing likely would not have delivered in time. “It found two reportable bacteria and an amoeba that would not have otherwise been caught using standard methods,” Kyle said. “I would never jump straight to a rare ameba when evaluating diarrhea. I might eventually get there after cultures and ova-and-parasite studies, but that could take days.”

Rapid Treatment and Recovery

The results immediately changed the clinical path. Kyle initiated targeted treatment right away and arranged brain imaging without hospital admission. “If the amoeba had gone untreated, it could have spread to his brain,” Kyle said. “It may have contributed to his loss of consciousness. Instead, we treated him quickly and obtained imaging without admitting him.”

The patient improved rapidly, recovered fully, and was monitored by the county health department. Follow-up testing later confirmed a cure. “We even tested for cure,” Kyle noted. “A real success story.”

Meeting Patients Where They Are

For Kyle, the case illustrates how comprehensive PCR testing can meet patients where they are—clinically and financially. “Holistically, we were able to fit a test into his life that he needed without breaking the bank,” he said. “We were the only ones in the area who could get answers this quickly. In 24 hours, we had a diagnosis, and he recovered.”
